It’s as though someone asks you who you are, and you say, “I went shopping and bought a white shirt, and it’s made of cotton.” These are all events of life that happen to you, and they’re exactly what you are not. They are the storyof your life—you were born in this country, you went to that college, this is your name and these are your credentials. What do those have to do with you?
When we are not present, we relate to people from our ready-made perspective. To truly relate, youhave to be there. You have to be present.
